College choice: “Hanover College is a small school. I thought that I didn’t want to go to a small school, but my mom said come on, you have to go and try it and visit. We visited, and you know how people talk about how you have that moment when you walk onto a campus and you know that’s where you want to go? I thought I wasn’t going to have that moment there, but I was like, ‘Yes, this is it!’ I spent the night there with a couple of students and it was all around a really good experience.”

Finding a career path: Grimes loved high school speech and debate competition and several personality and career tests revealed that she had a strong interest in careers that demand strong leadership. She plans to study English and Spanish at Hanover with plans for law school after hearing an inspiring author speak about immigration issues. “I have a mentor at church and her husband is a lawyer. He’s talked to me about how hard law school is and how you really have to want it, and what it is like to be a lawyer.”

Advice: “If you are a high school student now and you know you want to go to college, go for it. If you don’t have the support system, you have to be on it [the college application process]. It’s going to be stressful beginning of senior year, but push through it. If it’s something you want, you will get there. Having your whole life planned out is not something you need to do, but hopefully you will have an ‘aha’ moment.”
